Trinity has been in business for over 30 years and we have often received the same question; “What is my cheapest packaging option?” That’s an understandable question, most of us live and die by budget, but it’s amazing how many companies ask this question even though they know they sell expensive equipment and products like computers, aerospace parts for ships, high- Sell end art, blown glass, etc. . . . . . Their products have taken months, if not years, to develop, and just before they reach their end user, they want to cut corners. Oops!
On the other end of the spectrum, people were hooked on the presentation from the moment iPhones arrived in luxury packaging. Of course, companies want to make the same impression on their customers. The problem with most of these requests is that the product to be shipped costs less than $30 and the desired packaging can start as low as $20, especially for a start-up business starting with a low volume of inventory. How do you choose your carton quantity?
First, find out if you will be shipping individual cases or palletized cases. Start with your shipper’s sizing guidelines and work backward.
If you have shipping software, USPS offers a Priority Mail Cubic that will save you money using your box under their parameters. We use their guidelines to give you a starting point. Note that there are many sizes and weight parameters, so check with your carrier for theirs.
Presentation:
When a client wants a presentation, they often want marketing.
A great way to add marketing to your wholesale packaging is with custom printed boxes, custom printed water activatable tape, clear tape, or poly bags.
Using a 3-inch branded water-activated reinforcement tape (aka “Amazon paper tape”) deters theft and fraud. This is one of the reasons Amazon uses it. Boxes with clear marketing show your company’s pride and make a good first impression.
Easy packing/unpacking:
Understanding the packing and unpacking processes can significantly reduce processing time and headaches for your warehouse workers. During your sampling process, draw on the expertise of your warehouse staff to analyze the feasibility of your packaging. It should be simple and protective. Assembling boxes and positioning pads should be a process that can be repeated quickly and over and over again. If not, consider the fragility and cost of the item. Some products take longer to pack, but it is a necessary step to ensure protection. If the item doesn’t require special attention, it’s time to reconsider your packaging.
