What You Need to Know About HHC Cannabinoid

Humans have used cannabis from time immemorial in treating a broad spectrum of medical conditions. Scientists believe marijuana was used as far back as 2,500 years ago in the medical and textile industries.  

Interestingly, serious research into weed’s age-old medical claims didn’t begin until the mid-19th century. Findings from these studies have uncovered a lot about the herb besides its therapeutic potential. For instance, we now know that cannabis produces at least 130 cannabinoids.  

Cannabinoids are the specific chemicals in marijuana that account for its medicinal properties. Some of these compounds occur naturally in the cannabis plant, whereas others can be synthesized in the laboratory.  

In this article, we focus on one specific cannabinoid known as HHC. Read on for an insightful overview of HHC, including its potential benefits and adverse effects. 

1. What Is HHC? 

HHC is an abbreviation for hexahydrocannabinol. It refers to a hydrogenated derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol.

Commonly abbreviated as THC, tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the numerous cannabinoids in marijuana. THC provides nearly the same healing benefits as any cannabinoid. However, the compound’s main claim to fame is its psychedelic effects. Although cannabis produces other psychoactive chemicals, much of the plant’s mind-altering effects come from tetrahydrocannabinol.

Like most cannabinoids, hexahydrocannabinol comes in numerous product formulations.

HHC is natural to the extent that it exists in the cannabis plant, albeit in trace amounts. However, most industrially-available HHC products contain hexahydrocannabinol obtained from artificial manufacturing processes in the laboratory. 

5. How Are HHC Products Made? 

As already indicated, the first hexahydrocannabinol was created synthetically by Roger Adams. Adams obtained HHC by simply adding hydrogen molecules to delta-9 THC. Delta-9 THC is the most common and potent tetrahydrocannabinol derivative.  

The process of adding a hydrogen molecule to a compound to alter its chemical properties and molecular structure is known as hydrogenation.  

So, what does the process of producing HHC synthetically entail?  

First, manufacturers begin by extracting cannabidiol (CBD) from raw hemp. CBD is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. Although the compound exists in all cannabis variants, it’s more common in the hemp cultivar.  

After obtaining cannabidiol from hemp, the mixture is distilled and then isolated in a powder form.  

Next, acidic solutions are added to the CBD isolate powder to convert it to delta-8. Delta-8 is a derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol which differs from regular THC (delta-9) in its milder psychoactive effects.  

The last process involves the introduction of hydrogen molecules to the delta-8 solution to yield hexahydrocannabinol. The solution is then formulated into e-juice, tinctures, and other HHC-based products. 

6. Does HHC Offer Any Benefits? 

Hexahydrocannabinol is inherently a derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol. Therefore, the compound can provide the same therapeutic benefits as THC.  

You can use hexahydrocannabinol to relieve pain. Like THC, HHC treats pain by blocking pain signals from getting to the brain.  

HHC may also help in easing inflammation. That’s due to its potential inhibitory effects on inflammatory markers like cytokines.  

Other common ailments for which you can administer hexahydrocannabinol include anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and seizures. 

7. Can HHC Get You High? 

Hexahydrocannabinol’s chemical association with tetrahydrocannabinol means the compound can get you high. Most users report HHC’s psychedelic effects as near-similar to delta-8 THC.  

For comparison, hexahydrocannabinol is between 50 and 65% as potent as delta-9 THC.  

Although hexahydrocannabinol has milder effects than regular THC, it’s essential to mind your doses. Like any cannabinoid, HHC can trigger side effects if overdosed. Common adverse effects include drowsiness, irritability, dry mouth, and nausea. 

8. Is HHC Legal? 

The first synthetically manufactured hexahydrocannabinol was obtained by hydrogenating delta-9 THC. However, most HHC produced today comes from delta-8.  

Delta-8 is primarily derived from hemp, and according to the enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill, all hemp-derived compounds are federally legal if their delta-9 composition doesn’t exceed 0.3%.  

Therefore, HHC is theoretically legal at the federal level. However, that generally applies to naturally-obtained HHC. Note that cannabis laws are still largely silent on synthetic cannabinoids.

Research on tetrahydrocannabinol’s effects on the body is still a work in progress. And while the findings are generally promising, discussing them with your doctor before using HHC or any cannabis-based products is essential.
