In a move to aid international students, Canada has decided to extend post-study work permits for its international student permits by 18 months. With the new rules, those with post-graduate work permits will be able to extend their visas beginning April 6, while those whose permits expire in 2023 will also be able to seek an extension.
The new rules suggest that individuals with expired work permits will be able to restore their status. They will reportedly receive a temporary work authorization while awaiting the processing of their new work permit.
Indian students, who account for more than 35% of all study permit in Canada, could be among the largest beneficiaries of this move, with 2,26,450 students from the country studying in the North American country as of December 2022.
Meanwhile, Canada has stated that from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023, international students in Canada having off-campus employment authorisation on their study permit would be exempt from the 20-hour-per-week limit. As a result, overseas students in Canada will be able to work without a 20-hour cap in 2023.
