How to write your first article?

by Uneeb Khan

Anyone who’s been through the ordeal can attest: Writing your first scientific article is one of the most difficult and frustrating experiences of a researcher’s career. Summarizing a complex research project on a few pages in a clear and concise manner may seem like an impossible task at first glance. Fortunately, writing essays becomes a lot easier when you solve problems step-by-step in a structured way. Also, the writing process gets easier over time.

A scientific article is generally composed of the following parts:

The title

A good title should adequately describe the content of the article and should not be too long or too short. Choose a headline that grabs the reader’s attention and piques their interest. When choosing a title, choose words that may be the keywords of a search engine query.

The list of authors

If the article has multiple co-authors, you need to determine the order in which their names appear in the article. This seemingly trivial decision can be a source of conflict, as the order of authors is often associated with the importance of their contribution to the work. In particular, greater recognition is traditionally given to the first author on the list, which may benefit that author when applying for a scholarship or grant. The rules used to determine author order vary by research team and are usually chosen by the team leader. The most commonly encountered rules are as follows: Contribution Order, Alphabetical Order. Authors can also be sorted by affiliation or role.

The summary

The summary plays a vital role in an article. On the one hand, it helps arouse the reader’s interest and quickly invites him to work in the genre. Having a good Summarizer will entice readers to read the entire article, while a poorly written summary will have the opposite effect. On the other hand, access to full articles is usually restricted, but abstracts are usually not.

A good abstract should be a condensed version of the article, following the same structure as the article and highlighting the main points of each part of it.

Keywords

Most conferences or journals require authors to provide a list of 3 to 10 keywords that will be used to classify and index the article. Like the title, the choice of this list is important because it makes it easier for readers to find articles from search engines for queries related to the same topic.

Introduction

As the first part a reader encounters, the introduction can have a big impact on his perception of the work as a whole. A poorly written introduction, or one that does not clearly describe the motivation, goal, or contribution of the research, can give the reader the wrong impression. Therefore, this section requires special attention.

The introduction usually begins with a general introduction to the context in which the research took place (eg, domain, application, process, etc.). The role of this part is twofold. First, it naturally leads the reader to a specific research question. Second, it motivates research by describing the importance of its context.

The literature review

As the name suggests, this section is used to present major works of literature on the same topic as the article. The intent is not to provide a complete overview of work in a field, as is done in a literature review type article, but to link the article’s contributions to previous work. This section also shows the reader what he knows about the field.

Methodology

This section usually forms the core of the article. It is at this point that we explain in detail the main content of his research, the stages of implementation, and the experimental methods used to test his hypothesis.

Result

The role of this section is to present its main results and analyze them in terms of their research questions and hypotheses. Results are usually presented in the form of tables and graphs in a logical order.

The conclusion

Conclusions summarize the main objectives, contributions, and results of the study. This section generally contains the following three parts Read more
