How to Spot a Fake Air Jordan

The Air Jordan series is a coveted sneaker. However, counterfeiters are getting better at duplicating the design of the real shoes.

If you are looking to buy a pair of authentic Air Jordans, then you need to do some research before purchasing them. Here are a few tips on how to spot a fake.

Check the Laces

When you compare the laces of a fake pair against the authentic ones, you’ll notice that they are not as tightly packed together. On the real Jordan 1 High OG sneakers, extra laces are attached to the shoes and then wrapped together in a bag that fits snugly around the shoestrings.

This is a big red flag and shows that the shoes have been replicated from a cheap quality source. You’ll also find that the laces of the fake pair are longer than those on the legitimate pair.

Next, check the quality of the stitching on the heel of the shoe. High quality stitching should be tight, straight, evenly spaced and cleanly finished. The join between the upper and outsole should also be an even straight line with no excess glue showing.

Check the Wings Logo

Fake Air Jordans often come with a cheap or sloppy embossment on the wings logo. This is a common mistake made by fake manufacturers.

A real pair will have a more detailed embossment that is much deeper into the leather than the fake. It should also have a smooth finish instead of being glossy or painted.

In addition to this, the actual Nike logo on the wings is engraved into the leather with a recessed design and not flat on the leather like a fake. This will help stitchers locate the panels during assembly.

Another difference is the text on the tongue tag. The “AIR JORDAN” font is much thicker and bolder on the fake compared to the retails.

The fake Wings logo is also curved throughout its shape. This is a key detail that Dr KLEKT pointed out during his video review. It’s a dead giveaway that this pair is not an authentic pair.

Check the Perforations

With the recent news of five people being jailed for trafficking fake Air Jordan sneakers, it’s important to be vigilant when buying collectibles. Sneakers are among the most counterfeited items in the world, and there are certain indicators that will help you identify a fake Air Jordan as soon as possible.

The first thing to check is the perforations of the shoes. On authentic pairs, the holes are evenly distributed and perfectly punctured, while on fakes they’re not evenly spread and aren’t punctured all the way through the leather.

Next, pay attention to the font and size of the logo marks on the shoe. The font on authentic pairs is thinner and has consistent spacing between letters, while on replicas it’s thicker and displays a lot of sloppy edges.

Also look at the swoosh tip. On authentic pairs, the swoosh tip is never so close to the corner stitching and has slight spacing between each wing.

Check the Swoosh

When looking to identify a fake Air Jordan, the swoosh is one of the easiest things to spot. The shape of the swoosh is a tough one to mimic, especially when it comes to the hourglass curve.

While this isn’t a foolproof way to spot a fake, it can help you save time and money when you want to authenticate a pair of Air Jordans. However, it isn’t a universal flaw on all originals and is only a reliable indicator when dealing with top-tier replicas.

Another thing to notice about the swoosh on a fake Air Jordan is the quality of the print. On most fakes, the quality of the print is significantly worse than that of an original.
