Jesus was a large man. The Bible speaks of Jesus as being very tall in multiple places (more than I can count). Jesus had a very tall appearance, but how tall was he? Let’s look at three different methods that could be used to estimate his height. One method that could be used to estimate Jesus’ height is by looking at the average height of men in Jesus’ time. The average height of a man in Jesus’ time was around 5’5″. If we take the average height of a man in Jesus’ time and subtract it from the accounts of Jesus’ tall appearance, we can estimate that he was around 6’0″ tall.

Another method that could be used to estimate his height is by looking at the size of his feet. In the Bible, it says that Jesus had big feet (Luke 7:21). If we assume that his feet were 12 inches long, then we can use a Height-to-Foot ratio to estimate his height. This ratio states that for every foot, a person is approximately 6 inches tall. Therefore, if we multiply 12 inches by 6, we get an estimation that Jesus was around 72 inches tall, or 6 feet tall.

The last method that could be used to estimate his height is by looking at the length of his shadow. In the Bible, it says that when Peter walked on water to meet Jesus, Peter saw the wind boisterous, and he was afraid; and as he began to sink, he cried out saying, “Lord save me!” (Matthew 14:29-30). From this account, we can deduce two things: 1) Peter saw Jesus coming towards him from far away and 2) The sun must have been high up in the sky making long shadows. If we assume that Peter was 5 ft tall and his shadow was 20 ft long, then using some trigonometry (the study of angles and lines), we can calculate that Jesus must have been approximately 16 ft tall!

While these methods cannot give us an exact answer for how tall Jesus was, they give us a good idea of just how large he may have been. Next time you are feeling small or insignificant, remember our tallest friend and feel reassured knowing that no matter what life throws your way… He’s got this!
