Handmade soap and how it made

Handmade soap

Handmade soap is a natural and sustainable alternative to commercial soap products. It is made by combining oils and lye, which undergo a chemical reaction known as saponification. The result is a soap that is gentle on the skin and free of harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances.

Making handmade soap can seem intimidating at first, but with the right equipment and a little bit of knowledge, it is a fun and rewarding hobby. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own handmade soap:

Gather your ingredients and equipment. You will need a variety of oils (such as olive, coconut, and avocado), lye, a digital scale, a thermometer, safety goggles, gloves, and a well-ventilated workspace. You will also need a mold for your soap, which can be anything from a silicone loaf pan to a wooden box.

Measure and mix your oils. The type and amount of oils you use will depend on the properties you want your soap to have (such as moisturizing, cleansing, or bubbly). A common ratio is approximately 30% olive oil, 30% coconut oil, and 40% other oils.

Prepare your lye solution. Lye is a caustic substance that must be handled with caution. Wear your goggles and gloves and carefully measure out the correct amount of lye using a digital scale. Slowly add the lye to a small amount of water (never the other way around), stirring until it is fully dissolved.

Combine the oils and lye solution. Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils, stirring constantly. Use a stick blender to mix the ingredients until they reach “trace,” which is when the mixture thickens and leaves a trail when drizzled on top.

Add fragrances and other ingredients. This is the time to add any essential oils or other ingredients you want to include in your soap, such as herbs, flowers, or exfoliants. Stir well to ensure they are fully incorporated.

Pour the mixture into your mold. Carefully pour the soap mixture into your mold, using a spatula to smooth the top. Tap the mold gently to release any air bubbles.

Insulate the soap. Cover the mold with a towel or blanket to keep the heat in and help the soap set. Leave it undisturbed for at least 24 hours.

Unmold and cut the soap. Once the soap has hardened, it is ready to be unmolded and cut into bars. Use a sharp knife to carefully slice the soap into the desired size.

Cure the soap. Handmade soap needs to “cure” for several weeks in order to fully saponify and become mild and gentle on the skin. Place the bars in a well-ventilated area, turning them every few days to ensure even drying.

Making handmade soap is a rewarding and eco-friendly hobby. It allows you to create a product that is customized to your preferences and skin type and is free of harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances. With a little bit of practice, you can create beautiful, natural soaps that are perfect for you and your family.
