Can An Electric Wall Heater Actually Save You Money?

by Uneeb Khan

Ask your average homeowner in an area with a cold or mild climate what their impression of electric heat is, and you’re likely to get some sort of response along the lines of “We don’t use electric heat. It’s too expensive.”

Granted, more or less everyone recognizes that the environmental impact of electric heating is minimal, but the concept of electric heating is still plagued by persistent impressions of costliness.

But this is not really an accurate representation of reality. Let’s take a look at some projected figures associated with gas furnaces, electric heat pumps, and electric wall heaters and see if electric heat is, indeed, too expensive.

Comparing Some Numbers

For the purpose of comparison, let’s consider the cost of operating a gas furnace.

Now, we recognize that gas furnaces vary significantly in terms of AFUE (efficiency) rating, as well as in BTU (power) ratings, and many other factors, such as the square feet of a room or home size and location in the country.

So let’s hold the bar steady somewhere fair. We’ll consider your average gas furnace with an AFUE rating of 90, or 90% efficient, which makes it eligible for an ENERGY STAR rating.

Average estimates for yearly energy costs with such a furnace (not in extreme cold or very mild climates) are around $660. This breaks down to a per-hour cost of around 32 cents.

Granted, the number of days you run your furnace, and how high you keep the temperature in your home will impact this price; but as a basic estimate, it serves our purpose of comparison.

Comparing Some More Relevant Numbers (Electric Heaters)

The above figures are for gas heat; we need to compare electric heat to get a more faithful apples-to-apples approximation.

Heat pumps vary considerably in terms of wattage (power draw, which is the main determinant of operating cost) but, if we take average estimates for per-hour costs associated with heat pumps that are between 800W and 5,000W, hourly operating costs are going to fall between 10 cents and 98 cents per hour.

This, clearly, has at least the potential to outperform natural gas or propane heating; but what about an electrical wall heater like eheat’s Envi?

Electric wall heaters like eheat’s Envi are rarely considered alongside seemingly more robust solutions like gas furnaces and electric heat pumps, but that should change.

Thanks to eheat’s proprietary dual-stack convection technology (which does not require the use of a fan, and therefore eliminates fan-forced air) and energy-efficient electric heating elements, they have engineered down the per-hour cost of operation to as low as 4 or 5 cents.

That is more efficient than the operation of both gas furnaces and electric heat pumps by several factors and does not even account for the fact that both heat pumps and furnaces need costly year (and sometimes, bi-yearly) inspections, tune-ups, and other maintenance. (The Envi heater is effectively maintenance-free.)

On top of that, electric wall heaters allow you to heat rooms that are occupied, to the temperature desired, instead of heating empty rooms in a house, ineffectually and wastefully. They’re also easy to install, as compared to the high installation costs associated with furnaces and heat pumps.
